The “Shouldn’t Share” series explores the male gaze in online communities and its connections to the history of painting. I am fascinated by how this perspective continues among groups of men who feel disheartened by current political and social changes. By tracing this phenomenon back to historical art movements, I aim to highlight its enduring nature, its impact, and the potential for change. My work also adds to the broader conversation about gender dynamics in digital spaces and supports ongoing efforts for equity and inclusivity.
To emphasize this, I use a limited color palette and create ambiguity by withholding some context. By combining digital and physical techniques, I often alter or simplify elements to strengthen the narrative. I also set time limits for each piece and use thin layers of paint to reflect how we interact with images in the digital age. The goal is to investigate our understanding of the male gaze in today's online world and its ties to historical depictions, ultimately encouraging discussions that lead to positive change.
